Long Lake and Mt. Elwell

Mt. Elwell and Long Lake Loop

Embark on a scenic and challenging 6.5-mile loop through the Lakes Basin Recreation Area near Clio, California. This rugged alpine trail offers sweeping views, dramatic granite ridges, and serene high-mountain lakes, including Long Lake. A steady elevation gain leads hikers up toward Mount Elwell, rewarding the effort with panoramic vistas of the Sierra Buttes and surrounding peaks. Popular with hikers, trail runners, and birdwatchers, this trail offers both rewarding climbs and quiet forested stretches. While the route is well-traveled in summer, early mornings or weekdays can offer peaceful solitude in this stunning high country.
