Kings Creek Falls

Favorite Waterfall Hike of Lassen Park

Overview

For most visitors to Lassen, Kings Creek Falls is the favorite waterfall in the park.  If you only have time for one, start with King Creek Falls.  The hike can be done as a loop or an out-and-back hike. The trailhead is about an equal distance from the southwest or northwest entrance to the park.  For those wanting a longer hike, you can continue past Kings Creek Falls to the Bench Lake Loop.  Few hikers continue past the falls, so you can expect considerably less traffic on the trail afterward.

Trail Features

  • The primary attraction of the trail is Kings Creek Falls, a breathtaking 50-foot cascading waterfall popular with hikers and nature enthusiasts. The surrounding area also offers opportunities to observe the park’s unique volcanic features, diverse plant and animal life, and stunning scenery.
  • The trail provides opportunities for various activities, including photography, birdwatching, and wildflower viewing. The diverse landscape and abundant wildlife make it an ideal location for nature enthusiasts and photographers.
  • While the Kings Creek Waterfall is the main highlight, the section of the creek alongside the Cascade Foot section is equally impressive. However, hiking this section is restricted to uphill traffic returning to the Kings Creek Trailhead. Although fairly steep, many consider this the most rewarding part of the trail.

Tips for the Best Experience Hiking the Kings Creek Falls Trail

  • Plan to arrive early. This popular trail has limited parking on the south side of the main park road near the trailhead. Arriving early ensures a parking spot and a less crowded hiking experience. Parking is 5.5 miles north of the turn off to Lassen Peak or 3.5 miles southwest of the Summit Lake Campground.
  • The weather in the park can be unpredictable, so pack for various conditions. Dressing in layers is recommended.
  • Staying hydrated and fueled is essential for a safe and enjoyable hike. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.
  • Sturdy hiking boots with good traction are essential for navigating the trail’s varied terrain.
  • Bears have been spotted in this region of the park.  Know how to be bear aware.
  • Respect the environment: Leave no trace by packing all your trash, staying on designated trails, and minimizing your impact on the natural surroundings.
  • The best time to get photographs of King Creek Falls is late morning to shortly after noon, to have the falls in sunlight.
  • Enjoy the experience: Take time to appreciate the beauty of the park, the sounds of nature, and the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing the hike.
