A Volcanic Adventure in Lassen Volcanic National Park
Trailhead and Access:
Located in the northeastern region of Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Cinder Cone Trailhead is accessible via a 6-mile dirt road that branches off from Highway 44. This scenic drive offers glimpses of Butte Lake and the surrounding volcanic landscape before reaching the trailhead parking area.
Trail Features
The trail begins with the Cinder Cone Nature Trail, which leads to the base of Cinder Cone. The nature trail is 2.4 miles without hiking Cinder Cone. It is worth the hike for its geologic, cultural, and natural history. Part of this trail follows the Nobles Emigrant Trail before starting the hike up Cinder Cone. Download or pick up a Cinder Cone Nature Trail Brochure for information on the 14 stops along the trail.
Scenic Views
From the summit of Cinder Cone, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the Painted Dunes, Fantastic Lava Beds, and the broader Lassen Volcanic National Park. The colorful hues of the Painted Dunes contrast with the stark black lava flows, creating a unique and unforgettable visual experience. On clear days, distant peaks like Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen may also be visible.
Volcanic Landscape
The Cinder Cone is a testament to the park’s volcanic origins, formed by eruptions that deposited layers of ash and cinders over time. The surrounding landscape showcases other volcanic features, such as lava flows, obsidian deposits, and fumaroles, providing a glimpse into the dynamic forces that have shaped this region.
Essential Gear:
Given the challenging terrain, exposed conditions, and remoteness of the area, hikers should come prepared.

- Plenty of water while hiking and extra in your car.
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses).
- Snacks.
- Trekking poles can be helpful for stability on loose cinders and steep slopes.
- Layering clothing is also recommended, as temperatures can change dramatically throughout the day.
- The trail can also be dusty, especially on windy days, so it’s advisable to wear a bandana to cover your face.
- Check park conditions and weather forecasts before embarking on the hike.
