Mount Harkness Loop Trail

Located in Lassen Volcanic National Park, the Mount Harkness Trail climbs from the Juniper Lake area through lush red fir forest and open meadows to a historic fire lookout. The trail steadily ascends an ancient shield volcano, passing wildflower-filled slopes and offering early views of Lassen Peak.

At 1.7 miles, stay left at the trail split to continue to the summit. The final stretch crosses a cinder cone volcano, often alive with crickets and flocks of Clark’s nutcrackers. From the staffed lookout (8,046 ft), enjoy sweeping views across the park, into Nevada, and beyond.
