Spattercone Nature Trail is the origin of the Hat Creek Lava Flow, which was created about 30,000 years ago. The trail has 17 spots of geological significance. You can pick up a trail guide at the trailhead or download one before hiking.
This trail is in the Lassen National Forest on the south side of Hwy 44, between Old Station and the NW entrance of Lassen Volcanic National Park.
This trail is worth hiking in the spring when other trails in the region are still under snow. The PCT crosses the Spattercone Nature Trail for a short distance.
Due to the lack of shade, it is best to hike earlier in the day. Dogs are allowed on the trail.
