The Tobin trailhead in Plumas County

Tobin Trail

Tucked deep in the scenic Feather River Canyon, the Tobin Trail is an advanced intermediate-level hiking route that offers a remote and rugged adventure through the Plumas National Forest. Starting near the tiny community of Tobin, California, this 2.5-mile point-to-point trail winds through mixed conifer forest with dramatic canyon views, creek crossings, and rocky outcrops.

The first mile of the trail brings hikers to Colby Creek, a peaceful spot shaded by tall pines and ideal for a short rest or photo opportunity. From there, the trail continues climbing and traversing through steep terrain, eventually connecting to Buck’s Creek and beyond. While not heavily trafficked, this trail rewards the experienced hiker with solitude, natural beauty, and a sense of wilderness immersion.

Be prepared for narrow sections, elevation changes, and limited signage. This is a great trail for those seeking a challenging half-day hike or a backcountry connection to larger trail systems. Due to its canyon location, the trail is best enjoyed in spring and fall when temperatures are cooler.
