The Leonhardt Ranch Preserve offers a serene 1.3-mile out-and-back interpretive trail located just a short walk from downtown Quincy, California. This flat and accessible trail is perfect for families, birders, and nature enthusiasts who want to explore the beautiful fields and meadows of American Valley. With stunning views of Spanish Peak, Claremont, and Mount Hough, it’s an ideal spot to relax, enjoy the landscape, and observe a variety of wildlife.
The preserve is home to diverse habitats, including meadow, riparian, wetland, and pasture areas, which support a range of species such as beavers, coyotes, frogs, trout, raptors, Sandhill Cranes, and numerous songbirds like Bullock’s Oriole and Yellow-breasted Chat. The interpretive signs along the trail, created by Quincy High School students, offer insights into the area’s natural history and wildlife, making this a fantastic learning opportunity for visitors.
The best time to visit is from sunrise to sunset, especially in the evening when the dramatic alpenglow lights up the mountains, and the area comes alive with wildlife, including the elusive pygmy owl and industrious beavers along the creek. Please note that the preserve is primarily an outdoor classroom for local schools, and it is open to the public during non-school hours, including weekends.
