Winding through the heart of the Lakes Basin, this 7.9-mile loop is a rewarding way to experience some of the area’s most beautiful lakes and sweeping mountain views. Starting at the Round Lake Trailhead near Gold Lake Lodge, the route begins with a gentle forested ascent toward Round Lake, where remnants of an old mine tell stories of the region’s past.
From there, the trail climbs steadily to meet a stretch of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), offering high-elevation views that stretch across alpine basins, glacial lakes, and granite peaks. The loop then joins the Long Lake Trail briefly before linking with the Silver Lake Trail for a scenic descent. As you approach Silver Lake and later the Bear Lakes, the water views steal the show—crystal clear, perfect for a swim, and framed by rugged Sierra scenery.
The first half of the loop involves a consistent climb, while the return rewards you with a steady downhill cruise through a series of picturesque lakes. This trail has a bit of everything: historical intrigue, panoramic vistas, wildflowers in season, and lakes ideal for a quick dip on a warm day.
