For the “dimunitive
plants that most people miss,” area
wildflower experts Bill and Nancy Harnach
recommend the
Maddalena Ranch property, which is
owned by the
Feather River Land Trust and open to the
public.
The property, also
known for great birding, is located off
Hwy. 70 east of Portola. Travel south on
A-24 until you reach a sharp turn to the
east .
There are corrals, a port-a-potty and
signage. The area features both wetland
plants and “belly-ups” (the kind you have to
get down on your hands and knees to see, not
big and showy plants.) It also features Wild
Iris, Evening Primrose and some rare plants
such as the Sticky Purachorma. You can
follow the property all the way down to the
Middle Fork Feather River.

Best wildflower viewing is late May and
June, but early spring birdwatching and
canoeing in the watery canals are very
popular.
