Off Road Adventure

Sport utility vehicle owners take note! Plumas County has plenty of well-maintained, unpaved forest service roads that lead to lakes, look-outs and picnic sites. The roads access some 1.2 million acres of public land that can keep intrepid explorers happy for days on end.

A new booklet, "Backcountry Discovery Trail" has been developed by the good folks at the Plumas National Forest and is now available at all Plumas National Forest Ranger District Offices (see visitor centers). This beautiful guidebook is also available as a PDF (please be patient as it is a very large file.) These routes are all on gravel and dirt roads and are suitable for SUVs and high-clearance vehicles. The guidebook describes the various routes and makes some recommendations on what types of vehicles can use them. Alternate routes, which are best traveled in a 4-wheel-drive vehicles, are highlighted as well.

The Plumas County Visitors Bureau developed brochures featuring four popular backcountry road adventures, designed with SUV's in mind. These brochures are available at area visitor centers.

If you're looking for more rugged off-highway adventure, head for one of the 4x4 routes, staging areas or campgrounds developed specifically for off-highway vehicles.

The Plumas National Forest visitor map is available for sale to help guide off-highway users. To avoid fines, stay on designated roads and trails.
